All England Masters Badminton 2013
Avon’s Val O’Neill, playing at the National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes in the 97th All England Seniors Open Championships was successful, for the second time this season, in winning two major national titles and almost made it a clean sweep by getting to her third final before dropping a game.
The Championships featured over 300 players from 10 countries across ages from 35+ to 70+. Playing singles for the first time at this prestigious tournament O’Neill, from Chew Park BC, Keynsham, beat the experienced 2nd seed Beryl Goodall (Notts) 21-17, 21-18 to take the women’s 65+ title.
Having had a successful season at Ladies Doubles with current partner Pam Firth (Yorkshire), O’Neill & Firth justified their top seeding, comfortably beating the Danish second seeds Kaya Garbrecht & Grete Steenberg, 21-15, 21-13.

Ian Brothers & Val O’Neill with Mxd doubles winners Rena Jones & Jim Garrett

In the mixed doubles, playing with Ian Brothers (Kent), Val was denied a clean sweep of all titles, as they finished runners up to Jim Garret and Rena Jones (Kent). 7-21, 21-23, in the final.
This winning performance builds on her previous twin victories in the English Nationals played in December and should ensure her selection for the World Championships to be played in Ankara, Turkey in September.
Avon’s Mike Cox playing with Jim Garret (Kent) took the 65+ Men’s Doubles title again without dropping a game, repeating their previous success in the English Nationals. Mike was a semi-finalist at mixed doubles with Pam Firth and should also have secured his place to play in the World Championships.
Also representing Avon at these Championships were Di Durston & Chris Hufflett (45+ Mxd Doubles)
Penny Shears (60+ Women’s Doubles) from Beaufort Park BC.
Dave Gribble, Bristol BC, playing at 50+ Mens Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mxd Doubles.
