Squad In-Season Training

We are planning on holding squad sessions throughout the season at Bristol Metropolitan Academy, where the county restricted tournament and our home matches are also played.  These sessions are vital in continuing to develop the squad and will enable us to continue to monitor all players in the squad, so that we can fairly select teams for each match.  Please contact us if you would like to attend.

In-season squad training dates:

Sunday 16th Oct *
Sunday 23rd Oct *
Sunday 13th Nov
Sunday 15th Jan

* dates:
We always request that the 2nd and 3rd home matches are played together, so that both teams can support each other.  This isn’t always possible though, so on * dates, either the 2nd or 3rd teams have home matches.  In order for that team to have the support of the whole squad, we have still booked all the courts, so if you have not been selected for the match, you will be able to support your team mates, whilst also having a training session for part of the afternoon.

17-21 Squad

As many of you are aware, we have a 17-21 squad which aims to bridge the gap between the junior and senior county.  Previously this squad has been run separately from the seniors, but this year we are hoping to integrate the 17-21s into the senior setup more.  This will involve the 17-21s attending the above training sessions so that they can still train together, but also have the opportunity to watch the senior squad training.  They will therefore know what standard they are aiming for and also have the opportunity to play a few selected games against senior squad players too.  We are hoping that by doing this, the 17-21s will continue to develop and we shall be able to select them for senior matches when appropriate.

Finally… We are really looking forward to working together for the whole squad this season.  We are hoping to make the 3rd team much stronger within division 3 and to get the 2nd team back into division 1.  We can only do this with the backing, commitment and development of the whole senior squad.  We know that not everyone can attend all of the training sessions and the restricted tournament (neither can we!).  All we ask is that you attend at least two in-season training sessions and ideally the restricted tournament.  We would hate to not select someone who deserves a team place because we have not seen them, to know how well they are playing or that they even wish to play!  We really want to make this work as fair and as well as possible.  Equally, if you have any suggestions, requests or comments, please get in touch.

Congratulations to Avon's first team squad, they secured promotion to Premier Division 'A' at the weekend. They won division Premier 'B' by a single point from Cheshire.
Securing top spot was almost in doubt when they lost 8-2 to Lancashire in the final match on Sunday, but other results also went their way.

Louise Sobey struck gold when she won the Essex bronze final on Saturday the 26th March. She played in the women's doubles with partner from Portsmouth, Laura Woodward. They have been going to as many competitions as they can manage and the win lifts her up to a national ranking of 72 in doubles. To say she is delighted is an understatement, especially as she only started to learn how to play badminton a few years ago!!!
March 2011
Chris Coles who plays for Avon and who is in the GB Training Squad has just been announced as the 2011 Badminton Writers Association Dorothy Hinchcliff GB Young Player of the Year Award winner.

Chris is at Bath University and his family live locally at Clevedon.

His badminton abilities were, in part, developed through his progression through the age groups at Avon Juniors and through his coaching in the Bath University High Performance Centre.

AVON PERFORMANCE CENTRE
March 2011
There have been many discussions over the past months on the desirability of creating a Performance Centre in Avon. There is general support for a Performance Centre but currently no identified willingness of Individuals/Clubs/Organisations to be the key driver towards implementation of such a Centre. If there is any interest in being the key driver involved in the considerable initial effort required to establish a Performance Centre, would you contact a member of the Avon Council.

February 2011
