For those of you who don’t know about Premier league badminton these are the differences to the divisional county matches.
The league consists of 10 teams from around the country and they meet over 3 weekends during the season at neutral venues such as the national badminton centre in Milton Keynes, Hatfield University and Nottingham University.
During a weekend each team plays 3 matches. Each match consists of 10 rubbers (2 mens singles, 2 ladies singles, 2 mens doubles, 2 ladies doubles and 2 mixed doubles).
You score a point for each rubber won and at the end of the season once all teams have played each other the two teams with the most rubbers won are promoted to Premier A and the 2 teams with the least rubbers won are demoted into national division 1.
There has been 1 major change to the rules this year which means ‘A player can only play 2 rubbers per match’ and not the 3 as in previous years. This results in managers making tactical selections when picking their teams.
FIRST WEEKEND
The first Premier B weekend of the 2010/11 season started with bad news, Chris Coles had to withdraw with an injury at the last minute. This left a squad of nine players to travel the long distance to Gillingham in Kent. Two of the nine , Hannah Littlecote and Stuart Rowlands, making their debut for Avon senior ICC teams.
All the squad performed well over the weekend, and importantly played as a team. Avon finished the weekend in 4 th position in the table, only two points away from 2 nd place.
Squad:
Ladies – Hannah Littlecote, Nicole Webb, Ali Marr, Sarah Boyce & Emily Hollis
Men- Josh Green, Stuart Rowlands, Adam Smith & Geoff Ball

SECOND WEEKEND
The 2 nd Premier B weekend of the 2010/11 season always looked to be the toughest of the three Premier weekends. Avon played the top three placed top division after the first weekend: Hampshire, Surrey 2 and Leinster. Starting in 4 th position out of 10 teams it was the intention to try and stay in touch with the top teams. This would give us a good chance of getting promotion after the last weekend, when we are due to play teams further down the league.
The first match of the weekend was against Hampshire, and a good start from our singles players was essential. The commitment of the players was demonstrated by Hannah Littlecott, who came back from 16-20 down to win the deciding set in her game 22-20. This encouraged all the players and Avon went on to win 3 of the 4 singles games
Avon then went on to win 3 of the 4 level double games and 1 of the 2 mixed games to win the match 7-3.
Over the weekend Avon won 3 of the 4 singles games in each matches. This shows a strong and flexible singles line up. The men’s doubles was stronger, Avon winning all six games. With a current England international available in the ladies doubles and mixed the Avon team proved to be too strong for all the opposition over the weekend.
Avon beat Surrey 2 nd 9-1 and Leinster 6-4 to finish the league in top spot, above Leinster and Cheshire, who are tied, 4 points behind. This leaves the Avon 1 st team in a strong position to win Premier B at the final weekend in York during April.
The Squad:
Men: Geoff Ball, Chris Coles, Josh Green, James Phillips, Adam Porter and Adam Smith
Woman: Mariana Agathangelou, Sarah Boyce, Emily Hollis, Hannah Littlecott and Alison Marr
Supported by Brenda and Steve Bird, Jenny Buckley and Adrian Cantwell
